Health & Wellness coach scope of practice

Health and wellness coaches guide individuals and groups in evidence-based, client-centered processes to help them set and achieve self-determined health and wellness goals. They empower clients by drawing on their personal strengths, insights, and resources, assisting them in making sustainable, healthy lifestyle changes. Coaches act as accountability partners rather than directors, providing encouragement, exploring opportunities for growth, and helping clients implement self-management strategies. Their role includes offering support, facilitating behavioral change, and using external resources to help clients align their actions with their health vision while respecting any healthcare plans prescribed by medical professionals.

While health and wellness coaches may provide evidence-based information and resources, they do not diagnose, prescribe, or offer medical or psychological treatments. They work within the boundaries of their professional scope and, when appropriate, may support the implementation of treatment plans developed by licensed healthcare providers. Coaches with additional credentials may offer expert guidance within their designated scope, but any dual roles must be clearly communicated, documented, and understood by both the coach and client. They must ensure transparency, comply with ethical guidelines, and maintain a client-centered approach, respecting the limits of their knowledge and role.
